Sheri ValentePresident's Message

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” - Winston Churchill

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Westport Young Woman’s League. As we head into our 54th year, we look to the past for guidance, to the present with pride and to the future with great excitement and hope.

In this current tough financial climate it’s easy to get caught up in important matters affecting your life. However, in this period more than most any other, in a time of great need by so many, is the time for focus on what you can do for others. The unique paradox of giving, something members of the League realize, is that “you will get back more than you give” in ways you can’t always predict. With the League’s focus on “promoting a sense of community through volunteerism, social activities and fundraising for local charities,” we continue to give back despite the challenge of the times.

It is amazing and inspiring to witness women helping other women! WYWL is a diverse group of women empowering other women to better themselves and their communities. We are a group of focused and committed women standing together at our best to help others in need, truly a lofty goal and fundamental to what WYWL believes in. Community service is the “seed” that brings these women together and wonderful life-long friendships ensue.

In addition to all of our charitable activities we also provide social activities for members with varied interests, from a thriving book group, daytime gourmet, to the newly-formed “crafts clutch” for women to connect over their love of knitting, sewing, needlepoint or any other hand-held craft. There’s even a working woman’s group that will provide a social outlet for women working full-or part time. For women who are taking time off from their careers to raise their families, the League provides an opportunity for social contact with like-minded women.

The League’s two major fundraisers, the annual Creative Arts Festival (CAF) and Minute Man Race, both beloved Westport traditions, are perfect examples of how we promote a sense of community while raising funds for worthy organizations. CAF continues to be a pivotal component of our fundraising efforts, as does our Minute Man Race, which this year garnered the most runners ever – a record-breaking 1326 adults and children. Local business owners, who actively participate in these events and others, see opportunities to partner with WYWL as a way to promote their businesses, network with each other and support charitable endeavors.

I am truly honored to have the privilege of leading such a wonderful organization in this 54th year. I would like to remember and give thanks to the past leaders who have led us this far. Without their vision, hard work and determination, we couldn’t possibly be the successful organization that we are today. However, great organizations are never satisfied that their work is done… so we look to the future with a renewed commitment to make the next 50+ years even better than the first 50+ years. Come join us and see what we’re all about.
