President’s Message

Lauren Bromberg President 2019-20 Westport Young Woman’s League

At the heart of our League is our membership. We have over 100 women who come from different backgrounds and bring versatile skill sets and ideas to the table to help us progress forward as a League. I enjoy getting to know our members and hear about their personal journeys, including sharing my own. Over the years, I have forged many friendships that will last a lifetime. Ultimately, we all work as one unit with the same mission – to BUILD COMMUNITY in lower Fairfield County, CT. Part of being an active board member is sharing that passion with others and inspiring them to become involved. Board members actively network with others, opening up new doors and opportunities within their business network or community. My immersion in the League has connected me even more to Westport and the surrounding communities. I’ve been able to work with Westport Town Hall, Parks & Recreation, Police, Fire, EMS and our local businesses that Sponsor our events and our external event and marketing partners. We are able to partner with our Grant recipients on specific volunteer opportunities and program initiatives throughout the League year as well – from cooking and serving meals at the Gillespie Center, bedding drives for Homes with Hope/Susie’s House, providing Christmas wish tree gifts for the Ralphola Taylor Community YMCA, reading to children through the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, annual local Burying Hill beach clean-up, Al’s Angels Lemonade Stand and high tea at the Westport Center for Senior Activities and more. We also host two annual fundraising events during our League year. Over 4,000 CraftWestport patrons and 1,000 Minute Man Race attendees help us contribute to our mission. We draw patrons near and far and it’s special when you get to interact with members of the community. Net proceeds from these events enable us to distribute funds from our Grants program to local and/or education-based charities in lower Fairfield County. In 2019, we distributed $80,000 and over $4.3 million since 1956! Organizations in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Westport, Norwalk, Darien, Stamford and Greenwich have benefited from receiving a Grant. For a full list of Grant recipients, visit wywl.com/grants.

CraftWestport, in its 44th year, brings a unique experience to town. Over 200 modern American craft artists descend on Westport from around the country and patrons have the rare opportunity to interact with the artists who hand-made all of the items being offered at the show. You get to meet the artist, discuss their inspiration, materials they used and how the items were produced and where they came from throughout the US. It’s a one-of-a kind experience. This two-day event was held on November 9 & 10, 2019. View craftwestport.com for complete details.

Minute Man Race is a true community event. We host a 10K and 5K run that are USA Track & Field certified, a 5K walk and Kids Fun Run with Kids Zone. With over 1,000 participants, most come from our surrounding communities, but we draw many from MA, NY and throughout CT as well. The Race will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021 – visit minutemanrace.com for more information and to register.

All of our members’ hard work and dedication makes us who we are as a League. We would love for you to join us! For membership, sponsorship, volunteer opportunities and general information, take a look around our website, wywl.com! We can be reached at info@wywl.com
